Report on analysis of electronic paper development (Fragment)
This document is a fragment of the report on the trends of electrophoresis-based paper-like display development. Some trends, and particularly trends for gyricon and electronic-ink displays, are discussed. The trends were developed based upon the customized technical solution database. Some contradictions resolved by electrophoretic display developers are shown.

1. Introduction

Development of any technical system is directed toward the so-called ideal machine [1].  An ideal machine is a machine that performs its functions while the resources used to perform these functions are minimal, and at the limit tend towards zero.

Machines called displays are developing in the same direction. The function of a display is designated by its name – to display images. The display of images is based upon space modulation of the brightness and color of the screen – the image carrier. With the advent of computers, two types of displays have been used: electronic displays and paper. Electronic displays showed current results, while printed copies ensured the function of long-term storage and quick visual access to the results. Paper displays were called hardcopies. Visual perception and data analysis are easier if text and images are viewed on paper and not on an electronic display. This is due to the backlighting of monitors, which is hard on the human eye, whereas the paper reflects and diffuses ambient light. A bright and contrasting image on paper can be viewed from wide viewing angles. Unlike electronic displays, hard copies require no energy for storing data. Many printing devices have been developed to produce both black-and-white and color images on paper. However, hard copies required more and more space for storage and more and more paper. Paper is made of wood. More and more wood is needed to produce paper. Paper manufacturing is not environmentally friendly.
