Introduction According to conventional practice, a computer
mouse is connected to a computer via a cord extending from
the mouse to a port located on the back of the computer housing.
The cord length is fixed at approximately 2 meters to allow
the mouse to be comfortably manipulated by the user. Due to
this fixed length, the cord may become entangled with other
cords or cables, which makes the mouse difficult to manipulate.
Moreover, a too-lengthy cord may cause the area around the
computer to appear cluttered and may prevent the user from
efficiently performing other tasks which do not involve the
use of the computer system. A method for adjusting a mouse
cord’s length is needed.
Description To adjust the mouse cord’s length, the use of
a reel assembly is proposed. The reel assembly is comprised
of a frame, a rotatable spool, a shaft, a spring and a stop
mechanism. The cord is wound onto the spool. The force the
user exerts by placing his finger onto the pawl of the stop
mechanism releases the spool. In the process, the spring tends
to wind the cord onto the spool. However, the user's hand
can extend the cord to a desired length. Alternatively, the
user may allow the spring to wind the cord onto the spool
until the cord length reaches the desired length. The user
then releases the pawl and the stop mechanism blocks the rotation
of the spool. The mouse cord attains the required length.
Thus, a reel assembly adjusts the mouse cord’s length.
Additional information The stop mechanism may include a disk with notches
and a flexible pawl.
